Description

Common Name: Java Fern
Scientific Name: Microsorum Pteropus

Overview: Native to Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, China), Java Fern is a popular aquarium plant due to its rhizomatous growth. It’s easy to propagate, doesn’t require substrate planting, and absorbs nutrients through its leaves. The roots only serve to anchor it to surfaces like stones.

Appearance: Growing 15-30 cm tall, Java Fern is a soft plant ideal for aquarium backgrounds. It propagates by splitting its rhizome, and its leaves feature black spots (sporangia), the plant’s reproductive organs.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Temperature: 60-83°F
  • Lighting: Low light, no need for CO2 or strong lighting
  • pH Level: Best at 6.0-7.5
  • Maintenance: Requires minimal care, and no additional fertilizers needed. Ideal for tanks with plant-eating fish, like fancy goldfish.

Fun Fact: Java Fern is low-maintenance, making it a great choice for beginner aquarists.
